Web alert: security situation in Yemen - update (1)

News & Insights 19 April 2015

As of 11 April 2015, the Yemeni Foreign Ministry has stated that navigation in Yemen’s territorial waters is prohibited.

Further to the club’s previous web alerts issued on 26 March and 8 April 2015, we have received updates regarding the security situation in Yemen from our correspondent, Gulf Agency Company.

As of 11 April 2015, the Yemeni Foreign Ministry has stated that navigation in Yemen’s territorial waters is prohibited. The Yemeni Foreign Ministry has requested coalition forces led by Saudi Arabia to inspect and approve any ships intending to call at Yemeni ports prior to granting them access to designated maritime zones. There have been reports of a number of bulk carriers being denied access to Yemeni ports by coalition forces.

We are told that Balhaf LNG terminal is now closed and cargo operations have ceased.

Members should exercise extreme caution when considering trading at Yemeni ports. The situation is volatile and, as with our previous web alerts, we suggest that members liaise closely with their local agent and the relevant Flag State for up to date information. The club will continue to provide updates as and when we have further information.

If a member has any queries regarding the content of this web alert, they should not hesitate to get in touch with their usual club contact.
