With increasing reliance on computer based systems for navigation / engine management and vessels benefitting from ever greater system integration, it has been recognised that these advancements in technology have also rendered ships vulnerable to the most modern of threats, that of cyber-attack.
With increasing reliance on computer based systems for navigation / engine management and vessels benefitting from ever greater system integration, it has been recognised that these advancements in technology have also rendered ships vulnerable to the most modern of threats, that of cyber-attack.
Members are advised of the release of a new set of cyber security guidelines which have been developed as a means of mitigating the cyber security risks to which modern vessels are currently exposed. The development of these guidelines has been undertaken by a variety of different maritime organisations and stakeholders including:
- BIMCO
- CLIA
- ICS
- INTERCARGO
- INTERTANKO
These guidelines are intended to offer advice to ship owners and operators on how to put into place measures designed to maintain the cyber security of the systems used onboard their vessels.
The guidance includes information on:
- The threat posed
- Assessing the risk to their vessels
- Reducing the risk to their vessels
- The development of contingency plans
Its annexes also contain valuable additional information regarding various aspects of onboard cyber security. Members are urged to read these guidelines (please see attachment) and consider the information / implications for their vessels as a means of best protecting their assets from cyber-attack.
