Members are advised that the IMO ballast water convention has finally come into force after Finland deposited its instrument of ratification. This action has brought the convention to the threshold necessary for implementation. Members should now consider the logistics and preparations necessary for the installation of ballast water management systems, prior to 8 September 2017, the date the convention will enter into force. Intertanko is advising its members to remain cautious but focussed in the months ahead.

USCG ballast water considerations

The ratification of the IMO Ballast Water Convention adds a new dimension to the complications surrounding the USCG’s requirements for ballast water systems. Shipowners now face uncertainty, since IMO legislation requires the installation of a ballast water system, which may in due course need to be replaced if the USCG does not approve the original one installed. Members should remain alert for news relating to the USCG’s type approval process so that they may react to future developments.
