News & Insights 6 December 2018

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has issued a marine notice to inform industry stakeholders about the dangers of working with high pressure fire-fighting systems and the safeguards that may be implemented.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has issued a marine notice to inform industry stakeholders about the dangers of working with high pressure fire-fighting systems and the safeguards that may be implemented. This notice was produced in response to a recent incident in which a seafarer suffered a serious injury, whilst conducting routine maintenance work on a high pressure fire-fighting system.

The seafarer was injured when he removed a blanking cap from a hydrant. The seafarer was unaware that the line was pressurised. When the blanking cap came free it was expelled with force from the hydrant, striking the seafarer and causing a severe facial injury.

The notice is aimed at shipowners, operators, masters and crews and lists the factors contributing to the incident and recommendations for risk mitigation.  For full details please see the notice which is attached to this web alert.
