News: Pre-arrival reporting and COVID-19 in Canada

News & Insights 15 September 2020

Members should take note of a recent circular from the Chamber of Shipping in Canada.

Members should take note of a recent circular from the Chamber of Shipping in Canada regarding pre-arrival reporting and COVID-19 which is available on the right. The circular notes instances of ship operators failing to report suspected or positive COVID-19 cases onboard after the 96-hour-Pre arrival Information Report and the 24-Hour Report are filed. Failure to proactively communicate with Transport Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency about changes in crew health after required arrival reporting can lead to needless exposure of other crew and service providers, delayed medical treatment of sick crew and unnecessary commercial delays. Members are encouraged to communicate closely with Transport Canada and their local agent to ensure such risks are minimised.

The circular notes that Transport Canada is reviewing current procedures in order to identify areas of improvement. Members should closely monitor any forthcoming announcements and remain alert to this issue. If you have any questions about this alert, please contact your usual claims handler for further assistance.
