On 13 July 2020 the Benin authorites issued a decree requiring every vessel bound for a Benin port to have an embarked security team onboard. Where a vessel does not have an onboard security team, the Benin authorities will automatically provide security by use of the Benin security forces. All costs will be for the vessel.

Where a vessel's destination is a port of Benin and it has on board a security team, the vessel should request permission to enter Benin territorial waters 72 hours before the vessel's arrival.

Any violation of the decree may result in a prosecution under the Benin maritime and/or crimimal codes.

The decree and translation which can be found in the attachment box include details of the procedures and potential costs of inspections, security teams and escorts.
