The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), its members and partners have called for governments to prioritise seafarers for vaccinations. The ICS commented that “All nations have benefited from their sacrifice throughout the pandemic. Those same nations have a duty to prioritise seafarers for vaccinations and keep their word to allow crew changes.”
The ICS plea was timed to coincide with the ‘Day of the Seafarer’. On 25th June 2021, ships around the world sounded their horns to mark the international observation day which highlights the invaluable contribution of seafarers to the international trade and world economy. The ICS also released a video to raise awareness around the issue.
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to all seafarers around the world and the ICS is making continuous efforts to stand on their side. Last year, more than 400,000 seafarers worked beyond their contracts and, sadly, the crew change crisis is still growing. The ICS is seeking to persuade governments to recognise seafarers as key workers and prioritise their vaccination to protect them and enable them to work safely and return to their home countries at the end of their contracts.
Seafarer Wellbeing is one of Standard Club’s key initiatives and any developments which assist seafarers in obtaining vaccinations and addresses the crew change crisis are encouraged. Our Loss Prevention department is closely monitoring the developments around the vaccination of seafarers and their general wellbeing. More information on the initiative and the club’s related projects can be found on our dedicated ‘Seafarer Wellbeing’ website page, available at the link below.
