The Seafarers Happiness Index (SHI) Quarter 1 2021 results are a measure of happiness levels of seafarers amidst a backdrop of Covid-19 pandemic. Yet the average SHI results for Q1 2021 is at 6.46/10, a slight increase from 6.37 in Q4 2020, proving that big discrepancies in terms of welfare standards and conditions for seafarers continue to persist.

While it is comforting to see an upward trajectory, the margins are very fine and the report shows fluctuating happiness levels across the respondents, with extreme opposite responses recorded from those who report the highest levels of satisfaction to those who reveal deeply worrying circumstances.

The Loss Prevention department at Standard Club is dedicated to improving seafarer welfare, and testament to that commitment, the club is a signatory on the Neptune Declaration on Seafarer Wellbeing and Crew Change as well as a proud sponsor of the Seafarers Happiness Index, a report by Mission to Seafarers.
