News: The Judicial System in Turkey - COVID-19 outbreak

News & Insights 30 April 2020

Since the end of March, the Turkish government has taken various measures in an attempt to protect public health arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since the end of March, the Turkish government has taken various measures in an attempt to protect public health arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On 25 March 2020 the Grand National Assembly enacted legislation suspending all procedural deadlines until 30 April in order to prevent the loss of any rights due to the pandemic. A presidential decree issued on 30 April 2020 has extended this suspension to 15 June 2020. Therefore, with effect from 13 March 2020, all deadlines for filing an action in the Turkish courts have been suspended until 15 June 2020. For those deadlines which expire within fifteen or less days from the beginning of the suspension, the law automatically provides a fifteen-day extension from the first day following the end of the suspension.

The extension will be reassessed once the risk of the spread of COVID-19 in the country diminishes.

Members with ongoing cases subject to Turkish law are invited to liaise with their relevant club contacts to obtain further details on the consequences of the current situation to their cases.
