News & Insights 12 November 2013

Super-typhoon Haiyan continued to cause havoc in Philippine waters over the weekend

Super-typhoon Haiyan continued to cause havoc in Philippine waters over the weekend. Shipping casualties included groundings of two barges, a tanker and at least three container vessels. A passenger ferry broke free from its moorings and a super shuttle ferry was submerged by the storm surge. One crewmember has been declared missing.

Super Typhoon Haiyan was the world's strongest tropical cyclone since Hurricane Camille hit the US in 1969 with 305km/h winds. Current estimates are warning of a death toll which may exceed 10,000 people, with widespread devastation across the central Philippines islands.
