Web Alert: SAMSA Marine Notice (13 of 2017) - Vessels Requiring a Place of Refuge for Repairs
News & Insights 2 July 2017
Members intending to send their ships to South Africa for inspection or repairs are recommended to comply with the reporting requirements as stated in the notice.
Further to the club’s previous web alert, the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) has issued a Marine Notice no. 13 of 2017 (attached on the right) relating to all vessels requiring a place of refuge following an incident on board.
The club’s correspondent in South Africa has advised that the attached notice has come into force with immediate effect following a number of incidents where the ships have failed to comply with the previously issued Marine Notice (no. 10 of 2016) with regard to reporting of the incident.
Members intending to send their ships to South Africa for inspection or repairs are recommended to comply with the reporting requirements as stated in the notice.
SAMSA may appoint a surveyor to board the ship to investigate the nature and extent of the incident. If there is a threat of pollution a SAMSA approved salvage tug may be required to stand-by or to escort the vessel through the South African Exclusive Economic Zone.
Failure to comply with the stated requirements may result in levies in accordance with SAMSA Levies Act (Act 6 of 1998).
