On 23 February 2016 pirates attacked the AHTS Bourbon Liberty 251 in the Gulf of Guinea and kidnapped two crewmembers.
It is reported that six heavily armed men boarded the vessel whilst it was situated 55 nautical miles off Brass, Niger Delta. The pirates looted the ship, damaged its communication equipment, and kidnapped the Russian Master and a Nigerian AB, whilst most of the crew hid in the engine room.
The vessel’s crew sent a distress signal to alarm the Nigerian authorities. The Nigerian Navy immediately dispatched a task force. After the incident, the Bourbon Liberty 251 sailed to Onne in Nigeria with the remaining 10 crewmembers. All of them are safe and without injuries.
