Web alert: persistent problems in nickel ore trade in the Philippines

News & Insights 17 August 2015

Further to previous club advice including the club's publication on Liquefaction of Mineral Ore and Mineral Concentrates, problems persist in the mining and transportation of nickel ore from the Philippines.

Whilst demand is still high for nickel ores, cargo values remain lower such that many mines are taking all possible steps to try and ship cargoes, including cargo that represents a real danger of liquefying. With an increasingly unpredictable climate such that rain may fall throughout the year, the need for stringent testing of cargoes is even more important. However, accessing and testing of samples represents a real challenge for local surveyors. There are currently limited testing facilities locally or regionally, however, we understand that there are intentions to increase the testing equipment available in the Philippines.

The club will continue to monitor developments and keep members updated.
