Web alert: Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks – Update on Republic of Cyprus

News & Insights 13 August 2015

The club has received information through the International Group (IG) that the Nairobi Convention will take effect in the Republic of Cyprus from 22 October 2015.

The club refers to its recent circulars and web alerts (all of which can be found here), on the Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks ('the Nairobi Convention') which came into force on 14 April 2015.

Republic of Cyprus

The club has received information through the International Group (IG) that the Nairobi Convention will take effect in the Republic of Cyprus from 22 October 2015.

Early submission of applications for the issuing of Nairobi Convention certificates is strongly encouraged in order to ensure that all applications will be processed in time for the entry into force of the Nairobi Convention for the Republic of Cyprus.

Nairobi Convention certificates already obtained by Cyprus flagged vessels from any other State Party prior to the ratification of the Convention by the Republic of Cyprus, would be acceptable to the Republic of Cyprus Department of Merchant Shipping (DMS) until their expiry and do not have to be re-issued or replaced.

For the purpose of keeping a record of Cyprus flagged vessels already holding a Nairobi Convention certificate issued by any other State Party, the Owners, Managers and Representatives of Ships of such vessels are requested to submit to the DMS a copy of such certificate (can be emailed to bunkersclc@dms.mcw.gov.cy).

The circular attached to the right also advises that the application forms for the 2001 Bunkers Convention, the Nairobi Convention, the 1992 CLC Convention and the Athens Passenger Liability Regulation have now been incorporated into a single form.

There is a new fee structure and new requirements in respect of Cyprus registered and third country registered ships seeking IMO convention certificates. Further details are provided in the attached circular.
