Web-alert - Implementation of 0.5% sulphur limit for all foreign vessels entering Taiwanese ports from 1 Jan 2019

News & Insights 19 March 2018

Members are advised regarding the latest announcement from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) of Taiwan which requires all foreign vessels entering Taiwanese ports to use 0.5% sulphur fuel or other compliant fuel from 1 January 2019.

Members are advised regarding the latest announcement from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) of Taiwan which requires all foreign vessels entering Taiwanese ports to use 0.5% sulphur fuel or other compliant fuel from 1 January 2019.

This measure is aligned with IMO's mandate requiring the global sulphur cap in marine fuels to be lowered to 0.5% from the current 3.5%, starting from 1 January 2020. However, Taiwan has decided to implement the measure a year earlier.

The MOTC has also announced an incentive grant of NT$5,000 (around USD 172) to all ships entering regional ports that have changed to compliant fuel before the implementation date of 1 January 2019, starting from 1 February to the end of the year.

Members are therefore recommended to ensure that their ships due for calling at any Taiwanese port comply with relevant requirements and regulations. For more details, please refer to the MOTC official letter and KR Class notice.
