Web Alert: Confirmation of club cover for ships in distress
News & Insights 22 December 2016
If a ship is in distress and requires a port of refuge, the relevant authorities will want comfort cover in place to respond to potential liabilities that might arise, including pollution and wreck removal.
If a ship is in distress and requires a port of refuge, the relevant authorities will want comfort cover in place to respond to potential liabilities that might arise, including pollution and wreck removal.
All ships entered for P&I cover with an International Group (IG) club should carry on board a certificate of entry confirming that the ship enjoys the benefit of P&I cover, and the club in which it is entered.
These certificates can be checked easily by the relevant authorities by means of the ship search facilities on IG club websites. Links to the IG clubs' websites can be found here.
This approach is widely followed, including in:
- All 28 European Union member states
- Indian ports
- Japanese ports
- Turkish ports
