Seafarers Happiness Index (SHI) Quarter 2 2022 results are a measure of the happiness level of seafarers amidst the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic and the geopolitics of Russia and Ukraine. Yet this quarter registers a welcome rise in optimism with a significant uptick in the overall rating of 7.21/10, from 5.85 in the previous quarter.
Amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) in June 2022, introducing the prospect of universal maritime connectivity could have been a factor that gave rise to optimism feeding into the massive impact on positivity amongst seafarers.
It boosted satisfaction levels to 7.44/10, from 6.39 in the previous quarter, when it came to how happy seafarers were about contact with family when at sea.
The issue of connectivity and contact with loved ones while at sea has always been a hot topic in the survey. Responses in this quarter welcomed the changes that are proposed in the MLC but enthusiasm accompanied concerns about cost and quality.
“Having mandatory access is just a word, it is about how much i have to pay and how good the WiFi is … Whether it makes a difference we will see”.
