North American rights whales are one of the most endangered large whale species in the world. Due to changing migration patterns and the increased presence of North Atlantic right whales in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Government of Canada has updated its measures which aim to reduce the risk of collision s between whales and ships.
Seasonable speed restrictions continue to apply in specific zones. Transport Canada has issued a new bulletin outlining the speed restriction that ships must follow in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The bulletin sets out the changes to the speed restriction zones which are effective as of 28 April 2021 and is available here.
The latest right whale observations can be found on WhaleMap here.
