Further to the club’s previous update on the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), the situation has further worsened. WHO has released a statement on the meeting of the International Health Regulations (2005) Emergency Committee regarding the outbreak.
The committee was divergent in its views, and several members considered that it was too early to determine if they need to declare a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
The situation remains critical, and although a PHEIC has not been declared, the committee stands ready to be reconvened in approximately ten days’ time, or earlier should the Director-General deem it necessary to re-assess the situation.
More information on the WHO statement is available here.
Confirmed cases have been reported from China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, United states and possibly Singapore. WHO is issuing situation reports to inform the public on the developments which are available here.
Standard Club is guided by the views and recommendations issued by WHO in respect of this outbreak and advises members to remain vigilant.
