During the morning of 11 January 2020 a vessel reported a suspicious approach in position 12 05 24 N, 045 24 36 E, approximately 45 nm SSE of Port of Aden, Yemen. The vessel was approached by seven high speed craft with four people on board each craft.  The vessel was then re-approached approximately an hour later in position 12 05 24 N, 045 24 36 E. The vessel was later reported to be safe but we advise all ships in the area to be extra vigilant.

Even though the security incidents in the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Aden have declined over the years, this incident indicates that a threat remains to shipping in the area.

International shipping industry organisations, with military support, have launched a website dedicated to providing comprehensive maritime security guidance to companies and mariners. The website provides security-related guidance produced by the industry as well as links to other useful maritime and military security resources.

Members are strongly recommended to follow the guidance in the BMP5, the Global Counter Piracy Guidance; and to monitor the latest reports through UKMTO and MSCHOA websites.
