Web alert: Vector Management Plan for Port of Kandla

The Port Health Organization (PHO), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, in Kandla port has issued compliance instructions for port entry and operations. A vessel must have a Water Safety Plan and a Food Safety Plan as part of a Vector Management Plan.
 
The Vector Management Plan should include procedures and best practice related to the control of contagious diseases passed on by insects or other animals that normally transport infectious agents that constitute a public health risk, such as insects and rodents (mosquitoes, rats, mice, cockroaches, flies, lice and rat fleas). The Plan should also take into account the PHO Compliance Instructions for Port Entry and Operations and include a Pest Log, which is to be kept up to date by the vessel. Evidence of heavy rodent infestation may lead to the vessel’s removal from berth and shifting to anchorage for control measures and the vessel may be fined on a per day basis.
 
As a result, ship managers of vessels calling at Kandla port are advised to ensure that extra shipboard measures are implemented against Vectors.
