The International Group of P&I Clubs (IG clubs) and the shipping line members of the Cargo Incident Notification System (CINS) have released an update on the Guidelines for the carriage of Calcium Hypochlorite that were issued in May 2016.
The update includes an amendment to Paragraph 3.1 of the Guidelines in order to take into consideration the US measurement of Calcium Hypochlorite in 100 lb drums, as opposed to 45 kg drums.
Previously, Paragraph 3.1 read as follows:
“A package limit of 45 kg net weight in drums and a limit on the maximum payload per container not exceeding 14 tonnes (see footnote 4) is stipulated in these Guidelines."
The new version is as follows:
“A package limit of 45 kg net weight, or 100 lb under US measurement, in drums and a limit on the maximum payload of calcium hypochlorite per container not exceeding 14 tonnes (see footnote 4) is stipulated in these Guidelines.”
This amendment, whilst minor, reflects the consistent effort of the IG Clubs and CINS members to provide clear and logical step by step guidance for the safe carriage of Calcium Hypochlorite.
