News & Insights 24 March 2017

President Trump issued an Executive Order (E.O) 13769 which banned any immigrant or non-immigrant entry into the US of citizens from Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, Iran and Libya for the next 90 days.A new E.O 13780 entitled 'Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States' has come into effect on 6 March which introduces new restrictions on travel to the U.S. from the above listed countries with the sole exception of Iraq.

As previously reported by the club here, on 27 January 2017, President Trump issued an Executive Order (E.O) 13769 which banned any immigrant or non-immigrant entry into the US of citizens from Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, Iran and Libya for the next 90 days. As a result, crew members aboard ships entering US waters who are citizens of these countries would be denied entry to the US. However, E.O. 13769 was suspended by a US Federal court and this ruling was upheld by an appeal court in February 2017.

A new E.O 13780 entitled 'Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States' has come into effect on 6 March which introduces new restrictions on travel to the U.S. from the above listed countries with the sole exception of Iraq. Two US Federal courts have temporarily suspended E.O 13780 and a final ruling is expected from a third Federal court. Until such time as there is a final ruling on the validity of the E.O., crewmembers from those countries affected can continue to apply for U.S. visas.
