Web alert: security situation in Libya – reported air strikes against ships

The club is aware of a number of recent reports of air strikes taking place against ships that are calling at Libyan ports or transiting through Libyan waters.
 
On 10 May 2015, an attack is reported to have taken place near Derna in the east, resulting in the death of one crew member and injury to another. On 24 May, the Libyan Air Force is reported to have attacked a tanker calling at Sirte, south-east of Misrata/Misurata. Unconfirmed reports state that one person was killed in the most recent attack, with up to three people being injured. 
 
The NATO Shipping Centre states that ships passing near Libyan waters, especially close to Derna and Misrata/Misurata, risk interaction with armed forces. The Centre goes on to advise shipping interests to ensure that travel through Libyan waters is carried out expeditiously and with increased vigilance.
 
Members should exercise extreme caution when calling at Libyan ports or trading through Libyan waters. Before calling at the region, it is recommended that members carry out a full voyage risk-assessment and liaise closely with port and flag state authorities (as well as local agents). Members should notify hull and machinery underwriters and war risks providers of any such call. Members are strongly encouraged to comply fully with ISPS during calls to Libya.
