Web alert: Nigeria - use of armed guards
News & Insights 18 June 2014
Members should be aware there is currently jurisdictional uncertainty between the Nigerian navy and the Nigerian marine police
Members should be aware there is currently jurisdictional uncertainty between the Nigerian navy and the Nigerian marine police.
The Nigerian navy has detained/arrested ships with armed guards on board even where provided by the Nigerian marine police.
The Nigerian navy considers that it has jurisdiction over Nigeria's territorial sea and exclusive economic zone.
The Nigerian navy is not allowing armed guards on board ships, even those from the Nigerian marine police, whereas the Nigerian navy is itself only providing patrol boats/escorts.
The International Group is aware of the problem and has been informed that the IMO is in contact with the Nigerian Maritime Authority to try to clarify the situation. Further information will be provided as it comes to light.
