Web alert: nickel-ore liquefaction casualty

News & Insights 23 July 2015

Members are advised that regrettably another bulk carrier has potentially suffered the consequences of cargo liquefaction.

Members are advised that regrettably another bulk carrier has potentially suffered the consequences of cargo liquefaction. In this case the vessel was reported to be carrying nickel-ore from the Philippines to China. Initial reports state that the vessel encountered heavy swell which drenched the cargo and caused a catastrophic loss of stability with a 14 degrees list to starboard. The ship ran aground and the crew abandoned ship losing a crew member in the process.

The Standard Club has published a number of articles and guides on the problem of liquefaction (a guide to liquefaction is attached to the right). All members involved in the bulk trade must ensure that their vessels' masters are fully conversant with the hazards associated with this cargo, the documentation required and the safety measures which must be implemented to avoid a liquefaction casualty from occurring.
