Web alert: Changes to Free Fall Lifeboat test procedures
News & Insights 6 January 2014
A new regulation entering into force in January 2014 concerns the operational testing of free fall lifeboats.
A new regulation entering into force in January 2014 concerns the operational testing of free fall lifeboats fitted to SOLAS approved vessels, both new and existing.
The IMO has recognised that operational testing of free fall lifeboats poses a safety risk to those involved in the launch, because of this the IMO now permits vessels to conduct a 'simulated' launch in place of an actual launch for free fall lifeboats.
Owners should advise their crews that simulated launching, based on guidelines developed by the IMO, are permitted from 1st January 2014.
For further information please read the IMO circular.
