US Coast Guard Issues Interim Guidance for Revised MARPOL Annex V Implementation
News & Insights 6 March 2013
The US Coast Guard has published CG-CVC Policy Letter 13-01
The US Coast Guard has published CG-CVC Policy Letter 13-01: Interim Guidance for Revised MARPOL Annex V Implementation to serve as interim guidance for the revised MARPOL Annex V. The US implements MARPOL Annex V by the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships Regulations as provided in 33 CFR Part 151 to assist the regulated community in understanding and applying the law. However, US laws have not yet been updated to reflect the MARPOL Annex V amendments that took effect on 1 January 2013.
Through the policy letter, the US Coast Guard makes it clear that the lack of updated regulations does not exempt shipowners from meeting the requirements of MARPOL Annex V. The policy letter also outlines the differences between existing US regulations and the amended MARPOL Annex V.
