News: Beirut port update

News & Insights 8 September 2020

Written by

This update follows our previous news items on Beirut port after the explosion.

We refer to our previous updates of 5 August and 18 August 2020 which are linked to on this page.

We are informed that the Beirut port loading and discharging operations have returned to normal, while the container terminal remained largely unaffected by the explosion.

However, customs clearance and completion of similar formalities is taking longer due to the destruction of the port's administrative buildings and offices. Storage at the port also remains a significant issue because the port’s free zone and storage facilities (21 warehouses) were destroyed in the blast.

The port remains under the strict control of the army on account of ongoing investigations and any civilian seeking access to the port will need to obtain a special permit from the authorities.

Members are recommended to liaise with their local agent prior to berthing at Beirut for updates as to port operations and/or requirments.

We thank Andreas Maroulletis of Elias Marine Consultants for the update.
