International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea 1974 (SOLAS)

Convention providing the requirements necessary on-board ships for the safety of life at sea.

International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) 

The Convention was adopted in 1973 and has seen several modifications via subsequent Protocols.

International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for Pollution Prevention (ISM Code)

The ISM Code establishes safety management objectives and requires companies operating ships to implement a Safety Management System (SMS).

International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) 

Convention provides the certification and training required for all seafarers on merchant ships.

International Ship and Port Security Code(ISPS Code)

The ISPS Code was developed in the wake of the 9/11 attacks in the United States.  It is designed to enhance maritime security under SOLAS 1974 by providing a risk management framework for ships and port facilities.

 

International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG)

 The IMDG Code was developed as a uniform international code for the transport of dangerous goods by sea.  It sets out basic principles, detailed recommendations for individual substances, materials and articles, and a number of recommendations for good operational practice.
